It originated from the first entrepreneurship course I taught at the University of Pisa from 2011 through 2014 and is based on over 15 years of experience as an entrepreneur of venture backed technology companies. The course was designed for PhD researchers and MBA students looking to expand their work opportunities beyond their traditional prescribed paths into institutions and corporations. This material is not only for academic researchers, it assumes that entrepreneurship is latent in all people. Traditionally, we are taught not to aim for self-employment through entrepreneurship during the years of primary education. Anyone with an advanced education, self-motivation, ambition, a vision for how to improve the world, a good attitude, and a willingness to take on the challenge of actively exploring entrepreneurial pursuits, should be able to follow the material and put it to use in their own efforts. If you currently own or are working in a company and want to innovate and expand the business, this book might be of value in inspiring you to grow a high impact international business by leveraging the business you are already doing. Read it to prepare for the journey and put the concepts into action; do not be a passive reader. The book takes that the stance that entrepreneurship is a human instinct and we're all wired to be creative and resourceful. I agree. Most of us lose our natural entrepreneurial instincts in the fog of the industrial education and labor systems. By sharing both the psychological and practical formulae for entrepreneurship, StartUp offers the prescription to discover - or re-discover - the ability to chart your own path.
I knew Ray when we both worked for Bank of America and we have been in touch for over a decade. He is generous with his time and is always able to offer insightful comments. Now he put all his entrepreneurship insights into this wonderful book. There are so many things I could discuss but here I just want to highlight one minor suggestion from the book get a life partner to lower your cash flow risk. It is strikingly true to me as my wife has been working on her own start-up without any income for over a year.
I read the version via my Prime library and I strongly recommend it to anyone who want to do rather than study a start-up.
The book is a very interesting journey through business creation from the point of view of a "real" entrepreneur. The book mixes empirical approaches and patterns with solid methodologies that help the reader understanding the basic principles of startup creation and entrepreneurship coaching. It starts from the importance of observing and understanding market opportunities, and then it goes through the execution of business ideas up to the creation of solid business models.
The "Social by design" chapter is an amazing set of hints and approaches to catch the value from social networks, tech clusters and local ecosystem. The Pisa (Italy) tech and startup ecosystem is taken in particular consideration within the whole book.
It is a useful guide for new entrepreneurs as well as for academic and business professionals that want to see the global venture creation topic from another point of view. The book also includes a set of exercises that can be done by the reader or provided to students by a teacher.
Very recommended.
For anyone living the life of an entrepreneur, or considering the journey, this book provides helpful frameworks for understanding the associated challenges and opportunities. It also debunks many popular myths and warns the entrepreneur of decision traps that could shorten the life of any new venture. An important resource for the entrepreneur's toolbox!
